I believe that I am a better than average searcher. I have been researching for many years. There is so much information available today. I find that it is hard to narrow down the information and not get overwhelmed with it all. However, with all of the information that is out there, it takes a little time to find information that is accurate and reliable. I feel like I can help students perform adequate searches because I am usually familiar with topics that they are conducting research on. I feel like I use the same search patterns as the students. I begin all searches with Google, Wikipedia, and YouTube. However, when using Google, I usually use Google Scholar in order to find scholarly articles, and when using Wikipedia, the first thing I look at are the sources at the end of the article. I am hoping to learn more about searching and how to teach students to search more efficiently.
The four resources that I studied today were both insightful and overwhelming. I feel like I am learning so much about the new technology that is available to teachers and Media Specialists, but I also know that there is so much more out there. Teachers have so much pressure on them that they do not feel like they have the time to learn how to integrate new technology into their lessons. I want to help with this, but I get overwhelmed myself. Learning how to "wrangle" all of this technology could really help me. I enjoyed reading all of the resources because they showed me how digital literacy can be incorporated into the classroom and how using it can change teaching and learning and promote active engagement -which should be a goal of all teachers.
My name is Rhonda Elton. I am the Media Specialist at a K-8 school in Savannah, Ga. I am currently enrolled in classes at Georgia Southern University. My goal for this course is to learn about new technology resources that I can share with my teachers and students. I would like to help my teachers integrate more technology into their classrooms. I would also like to learn more about Web 2.0 tools.
